Question about external SSD drive. Can I make this work?
Hi,
I am thinking about getting an external SSD drive for my PS4.
Load times are becoming too much and it will help there, and in other areas.
The problem is that the PS4 has two USB inputs in the front.
One is for my Xim Apex/Titan 2 and the other is used by the bluetooth dongle for my steelseries headphones.
Anyway to implement the SSD (externally only) with this setup?
Thank you.

Yes, that was a problem for me too. But it is solved with the PS4 Pro which has an extra port on the back.
I use the first for the Titan, the second for the headset and the third for the hard drive.
Console tuner since my 1st controller.

Hmmm I may just wait for the PS5 then.
I'd hate to spend the money on a mostly lateral move.
Thank you for the reply.

Just an update.
I decided to try my hand at installing an internal SSD.
Couldn't have gone more smoothly.
Removing the old HDD and installing the new SSD took less than 8 minutes.
I have no idea why it was so intimidating to me lol

Out of interest, what size drive did you use, and do you think ssd are more reliable than hdd?
I ask because I generally only play psvr games now, and load times ain't that bad add the games are small. I have a large collection now and even my 2tb internal drive only has around 300gb left. Sometimes it clicks when I turn the ps4 on, so I think it may be about to die, so I was wondering if they make anything large enough (and small enough to fit) and if it's a safer bet/ longer lasting than just getting another hdd.
You're right though, replacing the internal dive is a doddle. Very easy.

I went with a 1 TB.
I notice that everything load a little more quickly, and some things a LOT more quickly.

I went with an SSHD for internal - 3TB with speedy loading. Not quite as fast as a pure SSD, but more affordable and more storage.
If you want an external HDD, beware of Seagate drives. I used a 4TB 3.5" HDD recommended by Eurogamer and had serious stuttering during cutscenes, and audio desync & skipping during voice lines.
I swapped the Seagate out for a 3TB 2.5" Western Digital and it's been problem-free.

Thanks both for the info.
Do you think the sshd is any more reliable/ longer lasting than a regular HDD?
I don't think I can go down to 1tb :(
Which 3tb drive did you go with.?

Same for me i have an internal 2TB SSHD (24% full) for the speed and the large storage.
I also have a 1TB SSHD (100% full) since the PS3 and it is very effective.

Same for me i have an external 4TB Seagate (64% full) and i have the same audio desync & skipping during voices on The Witcher 3, i will move the game in the internal drive to try if the external drive is the issue...

And maybe change the drive.
