Help with my PC Build? :)

Postby GSY » Sun Apr 19, 2015 4:38 am

Hey guys, just want to say sorry in advanced, because this isn't titan one related, but no one really looks at the off topic threads so i though i'd post this here. I'm about to build a new pc and i got all the parts picked out, but this is my first time building my own, and i just want to make sure all the parts i got are compatible with each other and aren't bad. Any suggestions would help too. Thanks.

Heres the part list:

-Case: http://www.amazon.com/Sentey-Gs-6008-St ... puter+case

-Power Supply: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-80PLUS-Certi ... =evga+500w

-Motherboard: http://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-Chipset- ... gabyte+atx

-Processor: http://www.amazon.com/AMD-FD8350FRHKBOX ... =amd+8core

-CPU Cooler (Do i need this?): http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master-Hyp ... cpu+cooler

-Ram: http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance ... orsair+ram

-Graphics Card: http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-128b ... upersc+acx

Total = $661
I already have a hdd, mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

Did i forget anything or do one of these parts suck? Let me know if i should change something or i'm good to go. Thanks! :joia:

I'll take a look at the individual components later, but I wanted to chime in. I've built 7 computers now. A few for my research lab, a few for some friends, and a few for myself. I can definitely help here. A couple of suggestions - I REALLY like Corsair products. The 500R case has to be the best around. I also use their power supplies. You shouldn't need more than 800W. They have "modular" supplies that let you reduce the amount of cables you have running inside the case. That is a huge plus. I also have Corsair RAM and a Corsair closed-loop water cooler for my CPU. My video card is a GIGABYTE brand as is my motherboard. I have an Intel i5-2500k (older) processor and a set of 3 Samsung ssd's running Mac, Windows, and Linux. I can get specs later when I'm back in town and not on my iPhone. Let me give you some feedback and some suggestions if you don't mind!!

I agree with Corsair being the best, I use the 750D case and would never recommend a different one, the screens are so easy to access and clean it makes managing the dust a breeze. I don't like AMD Myself I would suggest going with a Intel and a Z97 AS Rock Motherboard. Rosewill has a 1000W power supply for around $100 that is best for the money if you ever plan on having extra hard drives or hardware. I've recently built several "super computers" (probably spent $40,000 on PC builds in the last year setting up a self hosted Netflix(plex). You can build Top of the line minus the video card for about $1300, and you can drop back a years model on the components to get it cheaper from there. Most important things to keep in mind when building a PC is that the socket on the processor matches that of the motherboard, and that the Ram you purchase is on the compatibility list for the Motherboard. If you want to give us more information on what you will be using it for we could help you with a build to fit your price. Also Toms Hardware has some pretty good budget builds listed with part numbers and pricing. :joia:

I agree with the comments on Intel, but I've also done some AMD builds and haven't really had any problems with any of the options yet. Tom's Hardware is definitely a great place to start looking at entire builds that will be both priced out and spec'd to have matching hardware. Post your build here and we can help you with some decisions if you'd like :joia:

Best place I have found to buy PC components is newegg, and there 5-7 day eggsaver shipping i always receive it within 2-3 days. Toms hardware is just a PC tech blog with good information for someone new to building PC's. As for gaming, What Games? You would not be able to Max graphic settings on any higher end game with that build, Not even WoW. The 960 is a "decent" graphics card(lowest quality of its series, But from a good series of cards). 8GB of ram really is not much in relevance to the usage todays operating systems and programs require. By the next windows system it will most likely be that 8GB will be the minimum requirement. I would suggest at least 16GB(two 8GB sticks) leaving you room to expand later rather than replacing hardware that still functions. The CPU cooler is not necessary unless your looking to overclock, or play for very prolonged periods of time, or you have a very dusty desk space, If you did get one I would spring the extra $10 for a Corsair 120mm liquid cooling. The case really doesnt matter except for ease of install, looks, and how your able to maintain it and remove dust, to keep it working as long as possible. As for the Motherboard, even the best ones are only $140 with built in Bluetooth and Wifi, and its the Heart of the PC and essentially the most pain in the ass part to change later, So I always get the best here just so I never have to change it. Some boards even push better graphics than most gaming laptops. For the Power supply 500W would be really low for any type of gaming as the graphics card you selected will use 200-300W itself when you are maxing its capacity by gaming. Thats not leaving much power for the motherboard, hard drives, and external usb/internal pci also needing power. And lastly for AMD, it has a lower power consumption than Intel does, but I have had horrible luck with them and you dont get as much power out of them as you do Intel. Here is the last build I did.

That was without a video card, Personally I have 2 of these in mine but 1 would do great for any games you play with the above build.

Just my 2 cents, I like to add and not replace. You could even build it without a Video Card at first and add it later. And you could always drop back a model year on the parts to save some money for a smaller budget. but it will shorten the life of the PC, With the above build it would be a very long time before you needed to replace anything. :innocent_smile_1: :joia:

Wow thanks for all this info, but this build would be over by budget :ashamed:
I should have added it in earlier i'm on a $800 budget, so i was looking for more suggestions on what parts i could upgrade to help for a gaming build. What intel processor would be good since you recommend it over AMD? Also i found this power supply earlier today, would it be sufficient?:

If your budget is < $800, do not go with Intel. You will be fine with AMD processors and motherboards, and that will help you maintain that budget. Intel chips are more expensive (one of the reasons) because of the integrated graphics that you obviously will not be using.

So what would you recommend i upgrade in this build?

I would upgrade the case to one of the Corsair cases. Either the 500R (my recommendation) or the one that AKHUGHES recommended. I really like my case and have gone through 1 upgrade cycle with the same case and plan to do another in the near future, keeping the same case.

You may want a little more power behind the power supply or possibly go "modular". I would say 600W would be a minimum to keep from having to replace it in the future. Also, the modular power supplies let you plug in only the cables that you need to use, keeping everything really clean inside. This is not necessary, but it just makes it look really nice.

I'm uploading a couple images of the inside of my computer so you can see how "clean" I keep the inside.

For the CPU cooler, you SHOULD get one with the processor itself. Those are sufficient enough to keep you under budget.

Your RAM is fine. Corsair is good. You may want to consider doubling that up to 16 GB.

That graphics card looks fine as well.

Apart from that, I would consider the inputs available on the motherboard. Make sure you have a USB3 socket that you can use to plug in USB3 ports from the front part of your case (especially if you go with the Corsair 500R).
